Researchers on the ISS bioprinted bone tissue using 3D Bioprinting Solutions bioprinter.

Carrying out lengthy space expeditions poses a somewhat obvious yet problematic risk: Scarce resources and a lack of specialized medical care.

Hence, the drive for tissue transplants while on long-term space exploration missions.

Moscow-based 3D Bioprinting Solutions was able to bioprint bone tissue in micro-gravity by growing fragments of bone structure on the International Space Station (ISS). The bone tissue was bioprinted using the Organ.Autobioprinter, which was designed to perform this unique task in zero gravity.

Scientists 3D Print Microscopic Copper Version of David Statue

Researchers at ETH Zurich have 3D printed a microscale version of Michelangelo’s David using a special 3D printing technique.

Michelangelo’s original statue of David is among the world’s most famous pieces of art.

Now, researchers have created two tiny copper versions of the – originally 5.17 m tall – marble sculpture — a 1 mm tall David and a second one, which is even ten times smaller (0.1 mm).

Both statues were created using a 3D-printing technique developed by ETH Zurich Professor Tomaso Zambelli, together with a team lead by Giorgio Ercolano from Exaddon, using the company’s CERES additive micro-manufacturing system, which is capable of printing complex and pure metal objects at the micrometer scale and with submicrometer

3D Printing

Defense Distributed is no longer allowed to share 3D printed gun blueprints online, a federal judge in Seattle, USA ruled, reports Bloomberg News.

The Obama administration had previously banned posting gun blueprints online, saying they were violating arms export laws because they could be accessed and downloaded by anyone anywhere in the world. But federal judge Robert Lasnik ruled the Trump administration’s reversal of this decision in 2018 was illegal.

“Given the agency’s prior position regarding the need to regulate 3D-printed firearms and the CAD files used to manufacture them, it must do more than simply announce a contrary position,” he explained in his decision.

Welcome to Simply 3D’s ‘Blog’!

Welcome to our blog.  Here, you will find articles relating to some of the most recent developments within the industry.

3D printing is fast becoming a mainstream solution for the production of single items, prototypes and small run production.  In fact, 3D printing is usually the the quickest and most cost-effective way to manufacture low volumes.  As the technology is developing, the scale of production is also increasing.  From miniature models on a scale of a few millimetres, to houses, offices and even cars, the benefits of 3D printing continue to drive innovation within the industry.
